EAST POINT, GEORGIA  – An East Point Firefighter died in a motorcycle accident on Monday. Firefighter Carl Blake was killed on Jones Road in Northwest Atlanta.  A preliminary investigation revealed that Firefighter Blake was traveling north in the 2300 block of Jones Road on his 2007 Suzuki GSXR Motorcycle when he allegedly lost control of his motorcycle.

According to Atlanta Police reports, a witness to the accident indicated she was backing out of the driveway in the 2300 block of Jones Road, when she noticed Mr. Blake’s motorcycle.  Reports indicate the witness stated “…she applied her brakes, and saw Mr. Blake lose control of his motorcycle.”  The police report indicated that Mr. Blake hit the curb, and became airborne striking a utility pole.  The report further indicated there was “no collision between Mr. Blake’s vehicle and Ms. Grimes vehicle.”

Firefighter Blake was pronounced dead at the scene.  He was wearing a helmet, but it came off upon impact.

Fire Chief Rosemary R. Cloud said the loss is weighing heavy on the Department.  “Firefighter Blake’s death has had an enormous impact on us all.  As one can imagine the mood throughout the Department is somber.

Grief counseling has been set up for the entire Department.  Funeral arrangements are pending.
