History is being made with the hiring of Jay Hopson as Alcorn State’s new head football coach. Hopson becomes not only the first white head coach at the traditionally all-Black school but the first in the history of the Southwestern Athletic Conference.
At his introductory press conference on Monday, Hopson said he doesn’t see white or black, noting the school’s colors are purple and gold.
He replaces Melvin Spears, who was fired in February after leading the team to a 2-and-8 record in his only season.
Hopson has had stints as an assistant at Ole Miss, University of Southern Mississippi, University of Michigan, and, most recently, University of Memphis, where he was fired during the second week of last season after a 47-3 loss to Arkansas State.
