On today’s Powertalk with Lorraine Jacques- White, we discussed the  potential closing of 13 Atlanta Public Schools.   The plan to close these school was proposed by the APS Superintendent Errol Davis a few weeks ago. The Superintendent states that the school closing will save the district money.  Many parents and Community Activist are outraged by the plan to lose the schools, and want this plan to stop.
Our special guest today were parents and the PTA from Coan Middle School.  They have been protesting the Superintendents plan to close the schools, and plan to fight until the very end.

yes he should close those schools. A lot of those neigborhood don’t even have children living there anymore. you can tell the schools are not full, Not even the PTA, now you see parents protesting, but no parents at the PTA. I think Mr. Davis is really trying to help the system as far as money.Yes APS HAS A BAD SITUATION BUT NEED TO BE THANKFUL THAT Mr. Davis is trying to do the right think.

I agree wholeheartedly, the Black family has shrunk in size over the last decade, and there’s no way we can afford to have half empty schools that require maintenance, and large utility bills. Most of Atlanta’s taxes goes to the school system to begin with. As you said, the parents are there now protesting, but where were they when PTA meeting were in session? I live near an elementary school of 400 pupils, and a neighbor of mine that goes to PTA,said out of all of those children attending, only 12, yes I said 12 , parents showed up for PTA. It only shows just how disinterested Black parents are , when it comes to educating their child!
