ATLANTA (AP/WAOK) – Firefighters in Atlanta battled a blaze that shot thick, black smoke into the sky over the downtown area.

Atlanta Fire Capt. Jolyon Bundrige said a restaurant was on fire Thursday morning at 140 Mitchell St., on the south edge of downtown.

Firefighters were called the building, which houses Michon’s Smokehouse, shortly after 9 a.m.

Fire officials say three employees were inside preparing to open the restaurant at 11 a.m. for lunch when they saw smoke and flames along the ceiling area. Authorities said they were able to exit the building and call 911. No injuries were reported.

The cause of the blaze remained under investigation Thursday afternoon.

Michon’s had only been open for two weeks, and a grand opening was planned for March 23.
