ATLANTA (AP/WAOK) – The lawyer for a man facing charges in the videotaped beating of a gay man in southwest Atlanta says he’s reviewed the videotape and doesn’t believe what’s depicted in the video is a hate crime.

Attorney Jay Abt said Tuesday his client Dorian Moragne intends to plead not guilty to aggravated assault and robbery. A hearing has been set Friday. Two others have also been charged.

Abt says it appears that the person who filmed the attack actually yelled the gay slurs — not the three attackers. He declined to say whether his client was at the scene.

Federal authorities have said they’re investigating the case as a possible hate crime.

Abt says his client knew the victim, Brandon White. White’s attorney has said White did not know his attackers.
