ATLANTA (AP/WAOK) – Several black lawmakers are pushing changes to the HOPE scholarship they say will address racial disparities in the program.

Georgia Legislative Black Caucus Chairman Sen. Emanuel Jones of Decatur said Thursday the group has met with Gov. Nathan Deal to discuss their proposals.

A spokeswoman for the governor says Deal encouraged the group to work with him to bolster student achievement.

The caucus plans to file bills urging the Georgia Student Finance Commission to provide the Legislature with demographic information on the HOPE and Zell Miller scholarships and setting the income cap for eligibility at $140,000.

Republicans have said they want to keep HOPE a merit-based program.
