ATLANTA (CBS Atlanta) — A Republican Georgia congressman walked out during President Obama’s speech at the National Prayer Breakfast Thursday.

Rep. Phil Gingrey, R-Ga., left during Obama’s speech because “he was disturbed and offended by the president’s use of prayer and reflection time for partisan politics and class warfare.

“Rep. Gingrey found the breakfast to be inspiring until President Obama began politicking, which the congressman found to be inappropriate,” Jen Talaber, spokeswoman for Rep. Gingrey, told CBS Atlanta. “While he commends the president for his attendance, Rep. Gingrey wanted to hear what was in his heart and not campaign rhetoric.”

During the National Prayer Breakfast speech, the president compared his economic policies to the teachings of Jesus.

“And I think to myself, if I’m willing to give something up as somebody who’s been extraordinarily blessed, and give up some of the tax breaks that I enjoy, I actually think that’s going to make economic sense,” the president said. “But for me as a Christian, it also coincides with Jesus’s teaching that ‘for unto whom much is given, much shall be required.’”

Talaber told CBS Atlanta that these types of political comments during a prayer breakfast “disappointed” the congressman.

“There are 364 other days a year in which to do that.”

Gingrey has thrown his support behind Newt Gingrich during the GOP primaries.

obama a Christian? That’s the BIGGEST lie of the century!

  • Kate

The hate against Obama is so out of control that he can’t quote scripture concerning the poor. Now, if he used the prosperity “gospels” I wonder what the humble Senator from Georgia would have done? blessed are wealthy for they have been blessed by god? shame on the poor for not working hard enough? You Senator have a strange god. ($$$$)

  • stu

What’s inappropriate about Obama’s comments? In a nation where so many politicians claim they want the government to reflect their Christian values, reminding them the true message of Christ and how it applies to our country is not only permissible but necessary.

  • Mike

And you know this how? Because some right wing nut said so!?! Open your eyes dude.

  • Bud Strakey

Every time these right wing nuts open their damn mouths makes me more supportive of the democrats . Its getting to the point where I’m starting to abhor that party and all their unamerican values . The middle class don’t have enough to pay them their bribes aka lobbyist . Coming from a former republican ,shame on me .

  • Leah Boule

According to Mr. Gingrey,Jesus promoted class warfare and partisan politics . i don’t think the gathering was anything less without the presence of the, Honorable Mr. Gingrey..

  • Ronno

“President” should be capitalized when referring directly to the President of the United States of America, as in “…the President said.”

  • James Anthony Sapp

I have no problem with any of these people who just flat out hate the POTUS. They all have the right to choose what they believe in, but my problem is the flat out disrespect they do in his presence and outside his presence. Hell they talk about GWB so bad, but never the disrespect like they’ve done to this POTUS. It’s flatout shameful to let other countries see the hatred they have & display on/of this man. “SMDH” Hell I’ll be glad when they get another white POTUS back in the White House. Watch how things will suddenly change…

  • Juan

Well, I’m sure you exaggerate, the biggest lie of the century is that you’re an honorable human being.

  • Gloria Taylor

These white racist hate The President because he is educated, articulate, handsome and Black. They just can’t stand the fact that a black man is president. They think they have the god given right to be the rulers of the U S.
He does just about every thing right that’s why you hear them make the comments they make. it’s so sad that they are such a bunch of “haters”

  • Dalili

Whatever happened to agreeing to disagree? Being courteous and staying until the speech is over? It’s not required, however it speaks to etiquette and maturity. I wonder if the honorable gentleman leaves every speech or discussion simply because he is disappointed by it’s content. ti’s such a shame that we’ve gotten to this point.

  • Scott

Why isn’t the ACLU screaming about “separation of church and state”?

  • The Jimmy Z Show

Oh brother. UnAmerican? Obama has no clue what is appropriate and what is not. And apparently, neither do his supporters.

  • Charles

Uh, no it shouldn’t. It is capitalized only when it accompanies the proper name of the office holder. This is accepted journalistic style and in no way disrespectful, which is what you’re getting at.

  • BlueMountain

Maybe this right winger should go back to Europe where his ancestors came from.
He is an embarrassment of the nation.

  • BlueMountain

    Hahaha!!!
When a liberal mainline black Protestant Christian like Barack Obama actually uses the concepts from the bible, the white racist, evangelical Protestant freaks out.
    Nothing but a hypocrite.

  • BlueMountain

    You are right 100%.
And I am a white guy.

  • Charles

Relublicans and those to the right need to understand a few things; you don’t own Christianity nor do you set the rules, which means you can’t pick and choose when something is ok. Each and every one of the republican candidates, save Romney, has quoted some scripture at some point during this campaign. But NOW you have an issue when someone from across the aisle does it, and by the way does it in an actual and factual manner. You say you want less govt yet you want to tell a women what she can do with her body, here in Ga, you’re creating more municipalities by the hour (sounds like more govt. to me), you say you believe in life but you want the right to take a life if the pre ponderous of evidence says he/she is guilty. You can’t pick and choose.

  • Max Duhe

Obama talks about scripture in a speech – inexcusable. Michelle Bachmann claims that God told her to run for President – that’s a mandate.

  • heide

oh barack , barack how could you us the words of the white mans own bible against him like that
the fact that you can read is insulting enough
and the fact that you can quote the scriputres and do so eloquently is doubly so
you see the white mans bible is only sposed to be used by the white man too show the rest of us why it is he who is sposed to be in charge, overlord etc….
now youve gone and upset this poor mans nerves,,cause see in his mind and too many others like him
black folks and other less than humans was sposed to build the white house
not live in it (cept as maybe servants)..and certainly should not be telling real americans what to do……..real americans , such a joke

  • Michael Hill

And you believe this because your RNC/TP Handler told you so? Moron.

  • Michael Hill

Another example of the RepublicaNazi hatred for The Black Guy in the White House.

  • apensity

“reminding them the true message of Christ and how it applies to our country is not only permissible but necessary” WOW! Is THAT a ridiculous comment. Ever heard of separation of church and state? This whole Presidential bid for the GOP is a ridiculous atrocity to the politicians of our nation and to the Constitution of the United States. I am outraged at the GOP being so full of “true Christian values” while they are so opposite of everything they are preaching. If you are a “true Christian”, then the ridicule you disburse unto the rest of the world should have you going to hell for sure.

  • VeggieTart

The biggest lie of the century is that trickle down works. I guess the Republicans don’t like being reminded of Jesus’s teachings, do they?

  • DanPavelich

A Republican getting upset because Obama mixed religion and politics? He’s kidding, right?
