Opening this week at a theatre near you:
Sherlock Holmes – A Game of Shadows:
Sherlock Holmes (Robert Downey Jr.) and his trusty sidekick, Dr. Watson (Jude Law), are back, and this time they are trying to solve the murder of a Prince. There is evil behind the murder, and it’s a thrilling ride across Europe to catch the man responsible, Professor Moriarty. Along the way, Holmes and Watson get help from a mysterious Gypsy fortune teller (Noomi Rapace) and Holmes’ own brother, Mycroft (Stephen Fry).
What to Watch For: This is Noomi Rapace’s English language film debut, but fans know her well from the Swedish trio of Girl with the Dragon Tattoo films.
Word on the Street: Look for Rachel McAdams as the love of Holmes’s life, Irene Adler, with only a small role in this film. Her appearance, though, could set up a third film or a possible spinoff for her character.
Mission Impossible – Ghost Protocol:
Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his team are on the run when the Mission Impossible team is blamed for a bombing at the Kremlin. Hunt must figure out who is really responsible for the bombing while trying to stay alive.
What to Watch For: Will open at IMAX only screens on Friday, Dec. 16th and then opens nationally on Wednesday, Dec. 21st.
Word on the Street: This just might be the last mission for Tom Cruise. It’s rumored that Jeremy Renner will headline the next Mission Impossible film.
Alvin and the Chipmunks – Chipwrecked!:
The Chipmunks, the Chipettes and Dave are on a cruise ship bound for a music awards show. Their cruise is cut short by who else, Alvin, who causes the gang to find themselves on a deserted island. Can Dave find the boys before they get into too much trouble?
What to Watch For: Voicing the Chipmunks/Chipettes is an impressive group of actors: Justin Long (Alvin), Matthew Gray Gubler (Simon), Jesse McCartney (Theodore), Amy Poehler (Eleanor), Anna Faris (Jeanette) and Christina Applegate (Brittany).
Word on the Street: The film goes heavy on Lady Gaga and Katy Perry songs, sung, of course, in that Chipmunk style.
If you can’t make it to the theatre, then stay at home and watch movies on CW69 this weekend.
