Last-Minute Shoppers Rush To Buy Holiday Gifts

Cobb, Co. (AJC)-A shooting outside of Cumberland Mall Saturday night left one man dead and has triggered a homicide investigation by Cobb County police.

George Tabetando, 29, of Powder Springs was shot multiple times after getting into a fight with another man in the Macy’s parking lot near a Cobb Community Transit station, police said. Tabetando died from his injuries after he was taken to Emory-Adventist Hospital in Smyrna.

The shooter — described as a black male with dreadlocks — fled in a brown, charcoal or gray BMW, police said.

Lee Tharp, the mall’s general manager, said Cumberland has “enhanced” security because of the holiday shopping season. And that security, he said, includes off-duty Cobb police officers employed by the mall.

“We are very comfortable with our level of security as it is,” he said.
