ATLANTA (WAOK)-Local retailers across the metro Atlanta area are confirming they will allow Sunday alcohol sales to begin this weekend.
Winder began Sunday sales last weekend, confirming that it was among the very first cities in Georgia to begin Sunday sales, reported the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
An ordinance passed by its City Council called for sales to take effect the weekend after the election, according to City Clerk Sabrina Wall.
State law limits Sunday sales to the hours of 12:30 to 11:30 p.m.
However, individual cities are free to adopt stricter limitations, for example Jonesboro will prohibit the sale of alcohol on Christmas Day, which falls on a Sunday this year.
Residents in localities throughout the state – including 51 in metro Atlanta – were given the ability to vote whether to permit the retail sale of alcoholic beverages in convenience stores and supermarkets on Sunday in the Nov. 8 election.
Voters in the city of Atlanta also approved Sunday sales, but under an ordinance passed by the City Council in October, the sales will not begin until Jan. 1.
Here’s the latest list of cities near Atlanta to begin Sunday sales this weekend: Alpharetta, Avondale Estates, College Park, Duluth, East Point, Grayson, Jonesboro, Lawrenceville, Milton, Roswell, Sandy Springs, Snellville, Sugar Hill, Suwanee, Villa Rica and Woodstock.
