Your actions speak in volumes… Mike Smith doesn’t trust his defense however, I’m not gonna kill Coach Smith for going for it on fourth down from the Falcons’ own 29 yard line, after all his team was 2-for-2 on 4th down plays.
But I will question the play…
Why rush Michael Turner up the middle when you could have easily called a QB sneak with Matt Ryan and more than likely got the first down?
What happens to a Butterball on Thanksgiving Day?
They get stuffed… Just as Michael “Butterball” Turner did on the Falcons’ final possession leading to John Kasay’s 26-yard field goal in their overtime loss to the hated New Orleans Saints.
Even in the loss I’ll give the 5-and-4 Falcons some credit, things could have gotten a lot worse versus the Saints and their explosive but inconsistent offense and even though they trailed most of the game they managed to rally back after being down by 10 points in the final few minutes of regulation, tying the game on Matt Bryant’s 27-yard field goal on the final play of the fourth quarter.
Other things of note…
Michael Turner carried the ball 22 times for 96 yards, Julio Jones apparently re-injured his hamstring and sat out most of yesterday’s game, Harry Douglas had a great game catching 8 passes for 133 yards, Roddy White had 4 catches for 62 yards, and Matt Ryan finished 29-of-52 for 351 yards with two scores and two interceptions for Atlanta.
The Falcons host the Tennessee Titans 4pm, Sunday at the Georgia Dome.
Coach Smith comments on why he went for it on 4th down.
