ACWORTH, Ga. (CBS Atlanta) — A dog left for dead is now making a miraculous recovery.
Whitney, a 3-year-old pit bull mix, is standing and making progress after being hit by a car and left on the side of a road for more than a week.
“Someone took care of the dog for a week because her scars and skin were taken care of and then they abandoned her. I just don’t understand why someone would do that,” Dr. Toby Carmichael of the Lake City Animal Hospital told CBS Atlanta.
The dog was brought in by Morgan Chadwick, the director of Forgotten Paws Pet Rescue, which responded after someone found the animal.
“I am amazed by Whitney and her will to survive. When I found her, she still had milk in her from feeding puppies, but we were unable to locate those pups. I can’t even imagine all she went though beyond the physical,” Chadwick told CBS Atlanta.
Whitney underwent surgery on her broken femur, pelvis and left thigh bone. Dr. Carmichael says it will take months of rehab for the pit bull to make a full recovery.
The surgeries were performed at a discounted rate that will cost about $3,000.
Forgotten Paws will try to raise the funds to cover the cost.
“Whitney can be adopted at anytime now, but she must to the right family because she has to go under some special rehab,” Dr. Carmichael said.
