Coming into yesterday’s Atlanta Falcons-Detroit Lions matchup the biggest question for Atlanta was how in the world do they stop Calvin Johnson?
Brent Grimes and the entire Falcons’ secondary stepped up and held Megtron to only 5 grabs for 115 yards to go along with 1 touchdown in the Falcons 23-16 win over the Lions.
The offense playing once again without Rookie WR Julio Jones played at times like the defending NFC South Champs led by Michael Turner who picked up 122 yards on the ground.
Matt Ryan finished the day 20-of-34 for 218 yards including a 19 yard TD pass to Roddy White, and two picks for the 4-and-3 Falcons.
Tony Gonzalez made five catches for 62 yards, moving into second place on the all-time NFL receptions list with one-thousand, one-hundred-and-three, trailing only Jerry Rice.
After the game Falcons head coach Mike Smith said it took a complete team effort to get the victory.
The Falcons have a much needed bye this week before they host their division rivals, the New Orleans Saints.
Speaking of which I sure hope Atlanta’s secondary is for a BIGGER challenge versus what they saw against the Lions because yesterday the Saints looked poised to defeat anyone in their record breaking 62-7 win versus the lowly Indianapolis Colts last night.
New Orleans QB Drew Brees passed for 325 yards and five touchdowns on 31-of-35 passing for the 5-and-2 Saints, who racked up 557 total yards on offense.
Even with his team’s stellar performance Brees said they could have been better on third-down efficiency.
