GWINNETT Co(WAOK)-Gwinnett County Police are calling the death of two elderly members outside the First Baptist Church of Grayson, a murder-suicide.
Police say 76-year-old Clarence Porter fatally shot his sister, Avis M. Whitley, 85, in the head and then turned the gun on himself.
According to police, officers responded to a report of suicide at the First Baptist Church around 9:30 Sunday morning. When they arrived, they discovered the bodies of the siblings inside a white Mercury Villager van on the parking lot, dead from apparent gunshot wounds.
Church members say Porter who had a key to the church around 8:30 a.m. before the congregation showed up for service, went in the church left some money and his keys in the offering and then went outside to the parking lot.
Although investigators have not determined a motive for what they are calling the murder-suicide, they say Whitley was in poor health and had suffered a severe stroke several weeks ago.
