There is something in the profession of medicine that is referred to as the “Hippocratic Oath”. Part of it states, “Most especially must I tread with care in matters of life and death. If it is given me to save a life, all thanks. But it may also be within my power to take a life; this awesome responsibility must be faced with great humbleness and awareness of my own frailty. Above all, I must not play at God.” This is reasonable considering a human life is at stake but in the case of College Football and Major Conference Realignment this should not be so. Although this may be called program survival, I call it the Hypo Critic Oath which for me says “I gotta get mine, you gotta get yours!”
On our very show, as we were speaking about college football, I scribbled on a sheet of paper that eventually it would be four super conferences, conference championships serving as de-facto quarterfinal games, the BCS Bowl Games serving as semi-final games, and a “plus one” game to determine the National Champion. Well, one part of that equation has surfaced as major college football conferences are trying to acquire teams. The ACC has obtained Pittsburgh and Syracuse while other conferences are seeking to take teams especially from the Big-12 and Big East. There is major money being exchanged for the chance to make even more money in the future while there is no regard for other sports, geographical regions, and traditional practices. It seems to me that this same body that is so willing to break with the tradition of playing in a conference in which they were a charter member that maybe they can change the archaic rules in which they deal with student-athletes.
