Welcome to Atlanta Mr. Edwards!

The splash for the Atlanta Falcons was finally made in free agency with the signing of Defensive End Ray Edwards.  Edwards was inked to a five year contract worth $30 million.  He brings instant credibility to a defense that badly needed pass rush opposite John Abraham.

Edwards is no stranger to working opposite a superstar as he was the other bookend to Jared Allen in Minnesota.  Edwards himself as also filled the stat sheet, especially in the past two years with eight and a half and eight sacks respectively.  He has also been durable throughout his career, shying away from the injury bug.

Edwards should thrive for Defensive Coordinator Brian VanGorder’s system.  This 4-3 Defense finished 10th in the NFL in rushing yards allowed and fourth in interceptions with 22.  Edwards has been regarded as a great run defender as well as pass rusher by securing the edge on the outside.  However, this signing was specifically to fill a need for additional pass rush which should instantly improve the total defense, especially the secondary.

He will be lining up at Left Defensive End and will solidify what should be a great tandem for years to come and counteract what others have done in the NFC South to bring more offensive firepower.  Ray Edwards will only be a good pickup if he indeed produces.

If this acquisition leads to a Super Bowl he will snatch the title of Big Play Ray!!!
