If you don’t think the Braves just got better, you need to think again!
I know Michael Bourn’s name in MLB circles isn’t as sexy as Carlos Beltran or Hunter Pence but the man’s stats are sexy!
Not since Otis Nixon or Kenny Lofton have the Braves had a true dynamic lead-off hitter. At 28 years old Michael Bourn in my honest opinion is what the Braves have been missing. The 2x Gold Glove winner brings a .303 batting average and 39 stolen bases to an Atlanta team who thought Jordan Schafer batting .240 with 15 stolen bases was their best bet in the lead-off slot.
Still not sure of how good of a move this is?
In addition to this year’s stats Bourn has led MLB in stolen bases the past two seasons including an outstanding 61 stolen bases in 2009. As a matter of fact Bourn has had more stolen bases over the past two years then the entire Braves team, in 2010 Atlanta only managed to pick up 63 stolen bases, in 2009 a dismal 58 bases, and what’s so funny is that at the end of the season if you add Bourn’s career stolen bases he will eclipse Atlanta’s 2008, 2009, and 2010 stolen base totals combined.
If you’re keeping score it’s currently Michael Bourn 152, the Atlanta Braves 179.
For all of you still thinking the Braves didn’t get better since they didn’t Carlos Beltrand or Hunter Pence just sit back over the next 54 games and watch the “Re-Bourn” Braves do their thing.
The San Francisco Giants are a couple of Beltrand slumps away from not repeating as World Champions and Hunter Pence, we’ll just have to wait and see, but in my opinion he still has a lot to prove and doesn’t really upgrade the Phillies as much as the Braves-Bourn deal.
