Atlanta (WAOK)-Former Gov. Roy Barnes is expecting to make a full recovery after being diagnosed with prostate cancer. Barnes found out he had the disease shortly after last year’s elections. Barnes told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution the cancer was discovered during a routine exam and it was caught early.
Barnes has already received five weeks of “external radiation” treatment and an implant of radioactive seeds. Barnes says since he treatment began in January he has only missed two days of work at the family law firm in Marietta.
The first was the day the radioactive seeds were implanted and the next day because he still had a catheter, he said.
The former governor now 63 is encouraging all men to get their [prostate] checked and all women to get mammograms. Barnes will still have to go through another round of tests to determine if the cancer is completely gone.
Barnes, ran for re-election last year but lost to Gov. Nathan Deal.
