Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Remembered 43 Years Later

ATLANTA (WAOK) April 4, 2011 marks the 43rd anniversary of the assassination of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. King was killed by an assassin’s bullet on the second story balcony of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee on April 4, 1968.  He was just 39 years old. Here is the report given by CBS Anchor Dan Rather on the day of Dr. King’s death.

Authorities later arrested James Earl Ray who confessed to King’s assassination and then recanted his confession.  Ray was sentenced to life in prison and spent the rest of his life behind bars.   There are still many unanswered questions surrounding the death of Dr. King. He would have been 82 years old this year. King family members will participate in several events to commemorate the anniversary of Dr. King’s death including wreath laying , a march for jobs and a breakfast and dinner sponsored by the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.
