As if the City of Atlanta does not have enough problems with parking (people are still complaining about getting tickets) now we find out that the city is actually owed over $6 million in unpaid parking fines. One man owes more than $5 thousand. Ray Zagajewski, of downtown Atlanta, owes $5,040 for 102 unpaid parking tickets that he received between 2007 and 2009. Zagajewski says he’s not surprised he owes so much since he parks at expired meters and no parking zones because there are few spots to park near his downtown home on Peachtree Street.
City of Atlanta employees owe a lot too. Records show city vehicles have racked up 217 tickets since 2007 that haven’t been paid. But Michael Cheyne, Atlanta’s interim commissioner of public works says the free ride for employees is over.
Cheyne claims the city wasn’t notified of the delinquent citations.
