A dispute over the leadership of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference is finally headed for a judge.
Two factions vying for control of the civil rights organization have presented dozens of witnesses and exhibits before the end of a court hearing Friday. During testimony compliance officer Rev. Wilbert Shanklin testified about the difficulty of handling day to day business for the organization.
Absent from the proceedings was the Reverend Bernice King, president-elect of the SCLC. She’s scheduled to take office at the group’s annual convention next month.
Months of legal wrangling and bitter infighting have paralyzed the group’s operations and finances. The split on the SCLC board began as Chairman Raleigh Trammell and Treasurer Spiver Gordon came under investigation over allegations of financial mismanagement.
Trammel is also the subject of a sexual harrassment lawsuit filed by a young woman in Ohio.
