A plan to build a mosque and cultural center near NYC’s ground zero is drawing fire from loved ones of those whose lives were lost in the terrorist attack on 9/11.
Micheal Simons, a retired Port Authourity police detective, was trapped in the rubble of the World Trade Center. His partner died in the attack. Simons says Ground Zero is the wrong place for a mosque.
Rob Townley of the Community Board of Lower Manhattan, calls it “a seed of peace.” He says the board believes building the mosque is “a significant step in the Muslim community to counteract the hate and fanaticism in the minority of the community.”
More than 1,000 people turned out Sunday to protest the Islamic community center and mosque planned near Ground Zero.
