Atlanta Off Duty Cop Shot
Shots ring out in the West End
An incident that started out as a rim purchase at a gas station in the West End turned into a full fledged shootout on Saturday afternoon. Atlanta police say an off duty officer witnessed a man being robbed while he was trying to sell some rims at the Shell station at Lee and Oak Streets around 4:30. The officer came to the aid of the man being robbed and was shot in the arms and chest.
The incident then moved to the parking lot of the nearby Popeye’s restaurant, where two men began physically attacking the officer. Witnesses attempted to break up the altercation. One person actually hit one of the men attacking the officer with their car.
The officer was taken to Grady Hospital and is expected to survive his injuries. Police say he was wearing his bullet proof vest and that probably saved the officer’s life. Witnesses also say two of the men tried to get away by walking to the Marta station to board a train but police quickly arrested them. At least three people are currently being detained.
