She is a first.

The young lady with the engaging smile is 21-year-old Katie Washington who just became the first African American valedictorian at the University of Notre Dame.  Washington is a biological sciences major who plans to attend Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland to pursue a joint M.D./Ph.D degree.  Washington is graduating with a 4.0 GPA and will present the valedictory address at the May 16 commencement.

    I don’t believe in the philosphy of “first” in the race. That designation demeans us as a people. Given and even playing field and opportunity would come in first naturally. However, I am so super proud for this young lady that I can cry. Not becuase she is a first but because she had the opportunity to excel.
